DAY 38 – OCT 23
Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
Luke 21:1-4
Jesus often made examples of people who gave extravagantly (this widow, Zacchaeus, the woman anointing Jesus with expensive perfume). In each of these cases, there was a different type of generosity being displayed, but in all three situations, the giver gave something of great value relative to what they had to offer. We sometimes get caught up with how much we “have” to give, but for these individuals the question was how much “could” they give. Only a love of Jesus can lead to that kind of generosity.
We Pray: Heavenly Father, we might hesitate to pray for a spirit of generosity like the widow. However, we know that you sent Jesus to provide an abundant life (John 10:10). Holy Spirit, remind us that this abundance does not come from riches or fame, but rather from the joy of being adopted into Your family. With a gift like this, we cannot help but be generous with what You have provided for us. Thank you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
